This quiz includes Russia and the six European microstates: Andorra, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City. Turkey, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are grouped with Asia here, since most of their territory lies there.

The Balkan Peninsula is the hardest part of the map. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo all fit in an area smaller than France. Kosovo is drawn on the map but not asked, because not every UN member recognizes it.

Untangling Europe

  • Learn the Baltic states north to south: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.
  • Slovakia and Slovenia: Slovakia is north, next to Czechia; Slovenia is south, next to Italy and Croatia.
  • Croatia's coast wraps around Bosnia and Herzegovina like a crescent.
  • Moldova sits between Romania and Ukraine, and is landlocked.
